Ellen Hayashi is a sophomore at the University of Michigan majoring in violin performance with Professor Danielle Belen. A native of Utah, she was a Dorothy and Richard Starling Foundation Scholar in the violin studio of Eugene Watanabe. Ellen made her orchestral debut at age 10 with the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra, and has performed with orchestras in Utah and Michigan, notably three times with the Utah Symphony. Ellen was the 2021 Utah Best of State Youth Individual Instrumentalist and a 2021 and 2022 National YoungArts Foundation Winner. An avid chamber musician, Ellen was a gold medalist in the Pasadena Conservatory of Music Chamber Music Competition, WDAV Young Chamber Musicians Competition, ENKOR International Music Competition, and St. Paul String Quartet Competition as a member of The BEAR Quartet. Presently, she is a member of the Duffield String Quartet at the University of Michigan, which received the Rosseels String Quartet Award in 2022.
